20.DJ Shah feat Aruna - Now or Never

Roger Shah has been super on form this year, this is just one of so many awesome tracks he has made or remixed this year. The beautiful haunting introductory track to his epic debut album, Songbook.

19. Ronski Speed feat Aruna - All the Way

Can't go wrong with a Ronski Speed tune, the first single for their long awaited debut album (which is fookin awesome btw).

18. Andy Duguid - Wasted

Another phenomenal track by the very talented Andy Duguid. Tiesto specifically requested him to create a track for his renowned ISOS series, which is unprecedented. This gem is the result.

17. Mr Pit - Shana (Duderstadt Progressive Dub mix)

A silent killer at the dance floor, Duderstadt has been awesome remixers this year! The best of their fantastic remixes this year

16. Thrillseekers - City of Angels

After the highs of "By your side" and "Waiting Here For You" and the somewhat disappointing follow up "The Last Time", The Thrillseekers is back to his high standards! Awesome energy in this track!

15. C-System - Close My Eyes (Lemon & Eimar Remix)

Best listened to while eyes are closed.

14. Jay D feat Mat Zo - Tell Me (Myon at Albion Remix)

Best not kept a secret.

13. Bobina - Spinning (Paul Miller Remix)

Paul Miller is the new king of epics, this is one of his best remixes of many epics remixes this year.

12. Dokmai - Reason to Believe

This was the unknown vocal track that was making a big impact in Tiesto's performances (including Freedom Festival) everyone was dying to find out what track it was. Satiated when it was released on ISOS 7 finally. Kinda old school but in a good way.

11. Jochen Miller - Lost Connection

This is quite the anthem of 2008, with a billion mashups made to its credit.

10. Gianluca Motta feat Molly - Not Alone (Deadmau5 Remix)

Probably the least trancy of my top picks, but the bouncy vibe and the lyrics combine to form a very emotional and beautiful track.

9. Cerf, Mitiska and Jaren - You Never Said (Dash Berlin Remix)

Love Cerf & Mitiska productions and Jaren's vocals/songwriting talents. With a dash of one-trick-pony Dash Berlin treatment which gives more impact to the track. Another emotional vocal track.

8. Heatbeat - Paradise Garage

Beautiful haunting piano melody never goes wrong. Heatbeat are a force to be reckoned with!

7. The Doppler Effect - Beauty Hides in the Deep (The Blizzard Remix)

The original of this track was already epic as of last year, and who would have thought that a remix this year could actually top those? Well The Blizzard on Fire of course! Epic Epic tune.

6. Cressida - 6am (Kyau and Albert remix)

The elements which make up a track sometimes gel very well together, this is a primary example which rocks the dance floor

5. Tatana - Spring Breeze (Martin Roth Summerstyle Remix)

The kick at the starting part of the track - utter aural pleasure.

4. Andrew Bennett vs Tatana ft Tiff Lacey - Closer than a heartbeat (Gareth Emery remix)

Gareth Emery has so many awesome remixes this year, this is the best of the lot, a remix of a classic vocal track, in his chopped up vocal style, made to perfection for the dance floor.

3. Gareth Emery - This is That

Gaz is a production wizard, has a penchant for creating unique non generic tracks which rock the dance floor!

2. Orjan Nielsen - La Guitarra

Relative newcomer to the scene with his storming track! Beautiful guitar strings, lovely ambient feel, Ohmna bootleg remix with its Schulzy progressive sound is the personal favourite. This is the original mix, not too shabby in itself.

1. Armin van Buuren - In and Out of Love

Pretty mediocre dance vocal track from Armin's album Imagine, turned into a monster killer of a tune by remixers Blizzard and Richard Durand. I would have included both remixes as no. 2 and no.1 spot! In the end i used the Blizzard remix to acknowledge for the fact that Blizzard has truly owned this year with their remixes.


Overall, I would have to say that 2007 had more obvious "hits" and "anthems" than 2008...

Fave Artiste Albums of 2008

As promised, my 5 fave albums of the year. Many quality releases this year, would love to add a few other debutants as well (eg Leon Bolier) but alas only 5 spaces..

5. Sunlounger - Sunny Tales

Amazingly, DJ Shah released Sunny Tales not long after Songbook was released, and both are awesome albums, the balearic flavour is especially evident in the "chill" versions of the albums. Not quite as good as "Another Day in the Terrace" but that would be a very tough thing to top!

4. DJ Shah - Songbook

Debut album of DJ Shah, from the get-go you know this is something special. The way productions should be made.

3. Ronski Speed - Pure Devotion

No one can make uplifing trance tracks quite like him, talented producer finally releases his much awaited debut album, and the result is a stunning awesome work.

2. Andy Duguid - Believe

From the man who could do no wrong in 2008, his debut album is OUT OF THE WORLD. Forget Armin van Buuren and Ocean Lab's albums this year, this IS THE bomb.

And Number One is..
1. Dinka - Temptation

Tasty beats, original rhythms, fundamentally progressive based with tasty flavours of disco and trance. Every single track on this album is so beautifully crafted. My fave album of the year without a doubt.

Disappointment of the year:
Ocean Lab - Sirens of the Sea

Its not actually a bad album, pretty good in fact, but somehow all the years of anticipation leading to this album which features catchy tracks, though no where near the quality of the first few singles, which incidentally are NOT featured on the album, makes this a let down. Remixes of the tracks are good stuff though!

Spa Tick's Top 5 Favourite Mix Compilations of 2008

Been a pretty good year for quality compilations, many of which I dig too but unfortunately I can't list all. Here are my Top 5 favourite progressive/trance compilations of the year.

In particular order, they are:

5. Marcus Schossow - Tone Diary presents Ukraine

Schossow has a unique sound, somewhat channeled into this compilation, a very interesting album(2 discs) to listen to indeed!

4. Rank 1 presents High Contrast Recordings

Never really heard a mix compilation from them before, great track arrangments/selectionson this 2CD compilation for maximum aural pleasure.

3. Sasha - Involver 2

A truly immersive progressive sound to follow up on Sasha's Involver album! The wait was definitely worth it though!

2. Markus Schulz - Hypnotic Music Volume 12 (A/X)

This double album is chock full of progressive-trance gems. A beauty encompassing 2 CDs, including yet another great mix of Big Sky (If you're not sick of it yet that is LOL)

And Number One is...
1. Airwave - Summer Euphoria

So warm, so soothing, yet so epic, haunting, beautiful, a masterpiece mix with a fitting climax in the form of the euphoric Airwave track Urban Toureg. This is my fave mixed album of the year by far!

Overall, a great year and looking forward to yet another great year!

Disappointment of the Year:

Thrilseekers - Nightmusic Vol 3

Compared to Nightmusic Volume 2 (which was my favourite mix compilation last year), this year's was bland and predictable. Bleah.
