Well the results are out:
Top 5
01. Armin van Buuren
02. Tiësto
03. Paul van Dyk
04. Above & Beyond
05. David Guetta
Looks like my predictions were quite accurate;)
4 out of 5 of my Top 5 predictions are right; Top 2 were spot on; I rightly predicted the entry of Above & Beyond into the Top 5; I rightly predicted Highest New Entry for Deadmau5; the only thing I didn’t see coming was David Guetta’s (this year’s obligatory non-trance DJ) incursion into the Top 5.
Commentary (all personal views in nature & you are entitled to your own)
Armin (#1): Congrats, he really shapes the sounds of trance and progressive trance, good to have him as the leader on the board.
Above and Beyond(#4) in the Top 5: Sweet, finally, well deserved, especially if you have performed in front of a million people. Can’t wait for Zoukout!
Ferry Corsten (#6): Glad to see him heading upwards again! I am very glad to see him back towards the Top 5, to me it has always been the FAT (Ferry, Armin, Tiesto) Trilogy which shaped my evidently extreme enthusiasm for EDM. Ever innovative, can’t wait for his new album.
Infected Mushroom (#10): The most controversial entry perhaps, but anyone who has been to or seen a recording of their concert knows how massively energetic their gigs can get. More like a live act than a pure DJ, if you ignore the cheesy meaningless lyrics and and just groove to the psychedelic-pop beats, you’ll realize why they are rated so highly.
Deadmau5(#11): Nothing short of astounding, I think 11th is the highest new entry in the history of the awards (as far as I can remember). Hoping for local party organizers, known for their supreme slowness in recognizing current trends, to finally wake up their idea perhaps and get him in here!!
Andy Moor (#18): Breaks into the Top 20! Fantastic!
Eric Prydz (#21): This guy is legendary, why isn’t he ever brought in???
Gareth Emery (#23): Sweet. Well deserved indeed. I was hoping for a swifter ascent but this is good as well.
Bobina (#28): Quite surprised to see him here and at such a high position at that, but very welcome surprise!
DJ Shah (#58): Finally on the charts after years as a DJ! Thank goodness for his new found Balearic-soaked sound. Please get him in here too!!!!!
Gabriel & Dresden (#65): Their break up can only herald their inevitable slide..
Richard Durand (#66): Another man that should be brought in … I guess I can dream on
Sébastien Léger (#89): This guy is the bomb too…expecting him to rise the ranks in the following years.
Leon Bolier (#95): Very nice debut artiste album released this year, great to see his inclusion in the Top 100.
Tocadisco (#98): I expected higher…
Desyn Masiello (#>100): Too bad, so fast forgotten…L Meteoric rise and meteoric crash….hopefully this is only transitory…
Andy Duguid (#-): Next year next year. (Cross fingers)
Automatic disclaimer: Yes I know there are a few people who think DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs are a “farce” because it only rewards popularity and not skill, some of the nominees are more Live Acts or Producers than DJs, but ultimately, on it’s the music and vibe that counts, and if people feel happy with the music the DJ is playing there is no reason why they should not be nominated!
